Robert Macleod introduces a stress analysis tool

Robert Macleod Oct 2010Stress awareness day on 3rd November is a reminder of the pressures on us all. Given all the economic uncertainty and the spending cuts taken by our new coalition government, it is not surprising that stress levels have probably risen a notch or two. Uncertainty about the future will be common amongst all of us and will undoubtedly affect our thinking and performance at work.

How equipped are our managers to deal with this?

In all honestly, I've no definitive answer but would surmise that some managers will be and some won't; it is expected that the majority will fall into the latter. Coping with stress, work related or otherwise, requires a variety of approaches to be taken by managers to effectively support their people.

To help our people's well-being and up skill our managers, HSE (Health and Safety Executive), in association with CIPD and Investors in People have produced a really useful stress analysis tool for managers. Aptly named 'Stress Management Competency Indicator Tool', it is a short questionnaire which will help you assess whether your management behaviours are effective for reducing or preventing stress at work. It is a very insightful tool and I'd recommend it to you.

Good luck with your development activities in the coming months and I hope you enjoy this edition of ANECDOTE.
