ILM Level 4 Award in Managing Equality and Diversity in an organisation

View scheduled dates

ILM logoWith the advent of the Equality Act 2010, more organisations and individuals are becoming aware of their rights, responsibilities and the risks involved in any non-compliance with the Act.  But often it's hard to know where to start.

The Act imposes certain obligations on everyone concerned with the provision of services to the public whether in the private, public or voluntary sectors. Under the Act, the provision of services includes the provision of goods or facilities.

Codes of Practice, recently published by the Equality and Human Rights Commission, confirm that service providers will be liable for unlawful acts committed by their employees unless they can demonstrate that they have taken reasonable steps to prevent such acts.  This demonstration may provide a suitable defence.

Employers are more likely to be able to comply with their duties under the Act - and prevent their employees from discriminating against service users or customers - if they can demonstrate the following "reasonable steps":

  • Have developed and communicated a robust equality and diversity policy
  • Have ensured that staff understand the meaning of equality in the context of the policy and
  • Have made staff aware of their legal obligations under the Act

Designed to support the implementation of the reasonable steps detailed above and help demonstrate compliance, our new ILM Level 4 qualification aims to develop:

  • An up to date knowledge of the Equality Act 2010
  • An appreciation of its implications and benefits
  • An ability to define your own equality and diversity action plan and implement measures to achieve it
  • An ability to contribute to reducing the risks of possible future litigation

This is a single-unit, taught qualification that is accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), the UK's leading management qualification body. Following the two-day taught element of the qualification, participants will be given a work-based assignment to complete, supported by the trainer who will carry out one-to-one tutorials.

Learners from all sectors will gain great work-based benefit from the qualification.  The assignment will allow learners to review their existing culture in relation to equality and diversity, develop activities to implement good equality and diversity practices and manage equality and diversity on an ongoing basis.

For private and third sector organisations involved in tendering for public sector work, having an in-house, qualified champion will demonstrate and evidence your commitment to equality and diversity.

So far the course, which was launched in June, has been attended by a wide range of individuals from PLCs to SME's.  Here's what they said about it:

"Completing the course, and the assessment in particular, has helped me to focus on my workplace in the context of equality and diversity.  This has enabled me to consider the staff development activities needed to influence cultural change and manage equality and diversity more effectively," commented a Quality Manager from a learning provider.

"It gave me a great deal to think about - the trainer was excellent and they were great people to work with." UK Plc, Diversity and Inclusion Manager.

"Very informative and brought my knowledge up to date.  Now I know where to start to improve our practices and reduce our risks." -  Manager from a third sector organisation.

We are able to offer the qualification at a range of venues across the UK or even as an in-house development programme.  If the locations of the courses below aren't convenient for you, let us know and we can discuss what alternatives we have.
